Challenge is Cool - Day 29 - Black & White

Day 29 - Black and White
I am loving my blog....

When I started writing for my blog, it was simply to get all the words that buzzed around my rattling head and onto a white surface, to make room for the more ideas gurgling away in the background. I had decided that I would not put my blog on Facebook, or in anyway publicise it, I thought I would just wait until people 'found' me. So there I sat, lurking in my little tiny spec of the blogosphere madly madly madly typing typing typing.

Then I got a bit restless. What was the point of writing if there is no one reading it? So .... I got discouraged and stopped for a bit. Then I started again and decided I needed to talk about fashiony things like shoes, make-up, and shopping - three things I love. So, that gave me fodder for a time. But, still no-one 'found' me other than the dear people in my life who knew I was madly writing.

So, again, I stopped for a bit. But I was still writing, I just didn't put the stuff on my blog. I just wrote to be creative and to use my brain. It was nice.  I was writing things about my kids and my life and bargains I had found and recipes I had tried. I wrote about blogs I had read and websites I liked. The creative ball started gaining momentum. I was then able to write lots of posts and post them quite regularly. With encouragement from my very crafty agent, I put some links up on facebook. This has been amazing! I have had so much encouragement and feedback from my lovely friends and family that I feel all warm and fuzzy.

What was that? Oh, you want to know about the link to 'Black and White'? Well, my blog has always been black & white (and red, of course). Right from the beginning, these are the colours I have worked with. Just last night in my blogging masterclass with my crafty agent, we discussed the colours for my blog and we both could not think of any other colours to use, they are very 'me'.

As June draws to an end, and I think back over the 30+ posts I have written and posted, I am tired, pleased and a bit chuffed that I actually did this. I have met some lovely people who are at the same place on this blogger journey as I am. I have been in contact with some big name bloggers. I have been so encouraged by friends and family who have just showered me with encouragement.  Some of my posts have actually HELPED people - oh my goodness! I never assumed for a second that this would have happened, and again I am grateful.... Hmmmm, this is beginning to sound like an Oscar acceptance speech!

So - I will keep on writing, in fact I have posts ready to schedule until September - sometimes up to 4 times a week! I have joined Twitter, I have started my own Facebook page and I am making some good connections. I sure have learnt a lot over June!

Thanks for sharing this Challenge.....

Challenge is Cool - Day 28 - Flowers

The fatmumslim/white peach photography 30 day photo challenge...

Day 28 - Flowers
Hmmm.... will this do?

We have chickens. They eat flowers. Therefore no flowers in my garden. Although, let's be real - I am not a gardener - I have some agapanthus and some geraniums. Nothing spectacular.

But - I do have perfume! It takes tonnes of flowers to make one bottle of perfume.  So, really I am showing you a picture of the essence of flowers.

I am tired today - this blogging every day thing is a killer! Two days to go and then I think it will feel like a holiday when I go back to my 2-3 posts a week.

Thanks for stopping by for this piddly post... Perhaps you might like to go back and read something more interesting like.....

Tomorrow night, look out for Black & White - and I promise to have something better to share (Mr Cool is going out - so expect something whizz bang!)

Challenge is Cool - Day 27 - From a Distance

Day 27 - From a Distance

Our Pretty Carousel Horse

A few months ago, the lovely man who lives at the top of our street rescued this carousel horse from one of his friends, who was going to send it to the dump. Can you believe it? The DUMP!

She has been a beautiful addition to our backyard. The girls absolutely love sitting on her. She often has a bucket of leaves placed lovingly in front of her nose for when she gets hungry. We have named her Roslyn, because she has beautiful roses strewn all over her.

The close up in yesterday's post is of flowers on Roslyn's rump. She is just drippingly pretty all over.

Taking the photo of those flowers has had me thinking. How often to we see the minute details of life without seeing the big picture?

At the moment, we have a rental property that does not have tenants. So, on our comfortable and very adequate single income, we are paying our mortgage, plus rent on top of that. We have gone to a cash system to try and stem the loss of money from our accounts. This means, we draw out a certain amount of cash each month and that. is. it. That is all the money we are allowed access to.

When we started, I thought it would be easy and I thought I might be able to snaffle some spare money aside to save for a little holiday or something (like pretty shoes). But, it turns out, it has been tough. Last month we had some pretty interesting meals by the end, I had to simply use up what we had. This has been a good lesson in just buying what we actually need, not too many 'just in case' things.

It has been a great practice in discipline for us. I don't think I realised how much those morning teas at cafes, or that bargain rack shirt, or that extra 2 or 3 things from the grocery store was adding up to each and every month. But, we have worked out, that we were actually eating and wearing and experiencing thousands of dollars a year.

So... now? It has been fun. Miss Z and I don't do morning tea at the shops as much, we will duck into Coles and buy 12 donuts for $3 and enjoy them at home with hot chocolates and marshmallows on the porch. We don't buy takeaway for lunch on a Saturday, we buy some hot chips and have hot chip sandwiches (not healthy or gourmet, but delicious). We don't go out to the movies as much, we buy a $12 DVD and enjoy cuddling up on the couch.  We bake more and eat more home cooked meals. We don't actually feel as if we have lost any of our lifestyle. If anything, we have gained because we literally, physically know how much money we have.

Back to the horse and looking at things too closely. At times, $250 for groceries each week seems really hard. I have put many things back on the shelf. But... in the long run, we will have our investment property for a long time and it is making us more money than we can ever save. So... to put back the Nutella and the Tim Tams may seem unfair at the time, but when I think of the investment that is working for us, it is worth it.

When we get tenants and things settle down again, we have decided to keep up this system of dealing with money. It is keeping us honest and keeping us disciplined. We really want our kids to know that you don't need money to have fun and that long term goals are worth it.

Just as a footnote - we are really careful not to use the phrase, "We can't afford it" with our children. We feel this is so negative, we prefer use phrases like, "Not today", or "Maybe another day", or "One day", or "Let's wait and see" or even better, "We can only spend our money once, so let's think about it for a while". Note: We do say "No" to some things, but it is nice for a child to dream and to know that one day they might be able to have a Rupunzel Barbie or a Pink Skateboard.

So, are y'all thrifty?
